Spruce Shavings Insulation Samples
Research sample data for untreated, unscreened loose-fill spruce wood shavings under two conditioning environments.
Applicability
These results apply to specific loose-fill samples and are not general design values for spruce wood or other insulation products. Composition, particle shape, bulk density, moisture content and temperature can affect conductivity. Design requires reliable data for the actual product and conditions.
The 23 °C and relative humidity values describe conditioning environments; conductivity was measured at a mean temperature of 10 °C with a 10 K temperature difference across the sample. Only the listed discrete states are provided; do not interpolate or extrapolate. The consulted source does not specify the basis of the moisture percentage, so it must not be assumed to be a dry or wet basis.
Conditioned sample data
Density is the loose bulk density of the sample packed into the thermal insulation test frame. The table can be scrolled horizontally on small screens.
| Conditioning temperature °C | Conditioning humidity % RH | Loose bulk density kg/m³ | Moisture content % | Thermal conductivity W/(m·K) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 23 | 50 | 94.2 | 10.4 | 0.0488 |
| 23 | 80 | 92.7 | 14.7 | 0.0516 |
Lookup example
For loose spruce-shavings conditioned at 23 °C and 50% RH, the corresponding row gives 0.0488 W/(m·K); measurement mean temperature was 10 °C and the temperature difference was 10 K. This result is specific to the sample and conditions; do not interpolate or use it as a general product design value.
Method and license
Values are from the authors’ open dataset for wood-shavings-unmodified. Table 4 of the related paper reports the same study and is useful for transcription checks, but is not an independent experimental validation. The dataset gives densities to one decimal place; the paper displays the two densities as 94 and 93 kg/m³. The consulted source does not state a measurement uncertainty for this table.
